Laboratory of Physics

The Laboratory of Physics, as part of the Institute of Mathematics and Physics, is one of the oldest laboratories at the Faculty and it was founded ever since its establishment back in 1960. In addition, it fosters continuously the educational, scientific and research activity in the field of Physics and its application. Practical exercises in the Laboratory are performed for students at the Faculty for the following subjects: Physics 1, Physics 2, Electrooptics, Physics of Computer Games, Introduction to Nano-materials and Nano-technology, as well as Physics for students of the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering.

Furthermore, the Laboratory of Physics has been renovated twice in the recent years, and this has enabled laboratory exercises to be restored completely. Also, the laboratory is equipped with a number of instruments that are being used in the practical curriculum for students at the first cycle studies. Some of them are produced independently by the members of the laboratory, whereas all laboratory exercises for Atomic and Nuclear Physics have been provided by the project: ‘Improving Educational and Training Capabilities in Nuclear Science and Applications’, which was funded by the International Atomic Energy Agency – IAEA (2009-2011).

Simulation exercises that are being performed at the Laboratory, by using digital technologies, present the basic principles of Physics and its applications in different fields.  For that purpose, the Laboratory of Physics, as a unique of this kind at the Faculty, has produced video tutorials for all laboratory exercises and has made them available to students at the web-site of the Laboratory.

Regarding the available equipment, the Laboratory has instruments for precise measurements of lengths, instruments for determination of specific heat of solids, viscosity, air specific heat, efficiency coefficient of solar collector, focal length of thin lenses, photoelectric effect, Franck-Hertz experiment, electron diffraction, absorption of gamma rays with GM counter, band gap of Ge, α и β–spectroscopy, refraction index of glass plate, polarimetry, refraction index of liquids and solutions with Abbe refractometer, diffraction on a compact disc, optically stimulated luminescence, optical characterization with UV ‑ Vis spectroscopy, as well as 10 personal computers and software for simulations in LabVIEW, CrystalMaker, Lumerical Software Solutions and Unity3D.

On the other hand, the activities of the Laboratory are closely connected to the scientific and research activity as part of the educational process of the second and third cycle studies. The laboratory is equipped with instruments for photostimulated luminescence and thermoluminescence, UV spectroscopy, as well as fully equipped chemical laboratory for sample preparation. The equipment is used in the educational, scientific and research activity, for preparation of master and doctoral theses in a number of different areas of application of ionizing radiation and material characterization. Also, the Laboratory of Physics represents one of the most important segments in the Physics curriculum by providing students with practical experience related to basics of measurements, physical laws, logical analysis of results and modeling of problems. Students have the possibility to actively participate in extra-curriculum laboratory activities in the process of preparation of graduation theses, research projects and papers for student conferences.
